What Is A Radiant Floor Heat System

heatIf you’ve ever walked across a cold tile floor in the middle of the night, you probably wish you had a radiant floor heating system installed.  Dean Graziosi explains that there are two common types of radiant floor heating systems in use today; the two options homeowners have to choose from are electric and hydronic.  Each of these systems is installed under your flooring and provides you with a warm surface to step on any time of the year, according to Dean Graziosi.

Hydronic radiant floor heating systems heat your floors by installing plastic tubing which will run hot water under your flooring.  This type of system has a lower operating cost than an electric system, but they will require a pump, boiler, and gas lines to be installed.  They are also more complex to install and operate.  Homeowners who are planning to add this heating system to their entire home or a large portion of it may find that this is a good option for them.  However, even if you have some level of electrical and plumbing experience, it is highly recommended that you consult a heating expert to ensure that your system is properly installed and well-designed.

An electric system will transfer heat through electricity.  The most popular of these designs rely on a pre-spaced, continuous heating element which is woven into a plastic mat that is installed under your flooring.  Electric radiant floor systems tend to be more affordable and easier to install than the hydronic system.  However, the electric system will cost more to operate, which makes them an ideal choice for smaller spaces, such as bathrooms and kitchens.  These types of heating systems can be installed rather easily by a homeowner, but you may need to hire a professional electrician to complete the final hard-wire connection.

If you are interested in installing one of these systems in your home, you should keep in mind that your existing flooring will need to be pulled up.  If you are planning on replacing or updating your existing flooring, this may be the ideal time to install a radiant floor heating system.  To ensure that you purchase the correct amount of heating material, you should carefully measure the areas where you will be installing the heating system.  This will keep you from having to run back and forth to the home supply store to purchase additional materials.  Radiant floor heating systems can be a rather large investment, but once they are installed you will wonder how you lived without it for so long.
